A pharmacogenomic test (PGx) - sometimes called a DNA medication check or drug-response genetic test - analyses a small saliva sample for variants in the genes that control how your body absorbs, breaks down, and clears medication. Knowing your pharmacogenomic profile helps your doctor pick the right drug at the right dose, with fewer side effects and less trial-and-error.

Our panel screens 112 medications across 14 therapy areas including mental health, pain relief, cholesterol, cardiovascular, ADHD, oncology, infection, and immune system drugs. Lab analysis is performed at Eurofins UK on Illumina pharmacogenomic array platforms - the same combination used by occupational-health programmes at major UK insurers. Your results stay valid for life because your DNA doesn't change.

What pharmacogenomics actually measures

Pharmacogenomic testing focuses on a small set of genes that code for drug-metabolising enzymes (mostly the cytochrome P450 family - CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP2C9, CYP3A4/5), drug transporters (SLCO1B1), and drug targets (e.g. VKORC1 for warfarin, HLA-B for several immunology and HIV drugs).

Variants in these genes group people into four broad metaboliser phenotypes:

  • Poor metaboliser - the drug builds up in your body; standard doses cause side effects.
  • Intermediate metaboliser - slower-than-average; you may need a lower dose.
  • Normal metaboliser - standard dosing works as designed.
  • Rapid / ultra-rapid metaboliser - the drug clears too quickly to be effective at the usual dose; you may need a higher dose, or a different drug.

For example, around 5-10% of people of European ancestry are CYP2D6 poor metabolisers - they cannot effectively convert codeine to its active form, so codeine works poorly for pain relief. Conversely, ultra-rapid CYP2D6 metabolisers convert codeine to morphine so quickly that standard doses can become dangerous. A simple saliva test tells you which group you're in before a clinical decision needs to be made.

When NOT to take this test

A pharmacogenomic test is unsuitable for anyone whose DNA could be confused with a donor's. Specifically:

  • You've had a liver or kidney transplant
  • You've had a bone marrow or stem cell transplant
  • You've received a blood transfusion in the last four weeks

The reason is biological: transplanted tissue and recently-transfused blood carry the donor's DNA, which can mix with your own in a saliva sample and confuse the result. After a blood transfusion, donor DNA is typically cleared within 4 weeks. After bone-marrow or solid-organ transplant, the mix is permanent - a different testing approach is needed (we can refer you to a specialist clinical-genetics service).

You'll be asked these three questions before you can complete checkout. If any answer is "yes", we'll cancel your order automatically - no payment taken - and email you with next steps.

How long do results last?

Forever. Your genome doesn't change, so the variants we report stay valid for life. Save your report - when your doctor next prescribes a drug from the panel, you can show it to them and they can adjust the choice or dose.

That said, interpretation evolves. New evidence is added to the international PGx databases (CPIC, DPWG) every year. Your report reflects the science as of the date it was issued; check back periodically with your GP if your prescription set changes substantially.

What is a pharmacogenomic test?

Pharmacogenomics (PGx for short) studies how your genetic makeup affects your response to medication. A pharmacogenomic test analyses variants in the genes that control how your body absorbs and breaks down drugs - most commonly cytochrome P450 enzymes like CYP2D6, CYP2C19, and CYP2C9. The result tells your doctor which medications are likely to work for you, which might cause side effects at standard doses, and where a different drug or dose might be a better fit.

How is this different from a medication check at Bupa or another provider?

The underlying science is the same - Eurofins UK runs the lab analysis on Illumina PGx arrays for both. We use the medical-literature term (pharmacogenomic test) rather than Bupa's consumer-friendly Medication Check branding, but it's the same panel breadth (112+ drugs) and the same lab. Our pricing is direct-to-consumer at £210 with the GP follow-up included.

How many medications does the test cover?

112 medications at the time of writing, across 14 therapy areas: mental health (25 drugs including SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics, and antipsychotics), pain relief (12 drugs including codeine, tramadol, oxycodone), cholesterol (7 statins), heart (9 drugs including warfarin and clopidogrel), oncology (11 drugs), infection (12 drugs), immune system, digestive system, nervous system, diabetes, bone-and-joint, ADHD, and others. The panel is updated as new evidence emerges.

Do I need to stop my current medication before the test?

No. Take your prescribed medication exactly as your doctor recommended - your current prescriptions do not affect the result. Pharmacogenomic testing reads your DNA, not the drugs in your bloodstream.

How do I prepare for the saliva sample?

For 30 minutes before collection, please don't eat, drink (water is fine), smoke, vape, brush your teeth, or chew gum. This keeps the saliva sample as clean as possible. Then spit into the collection tube up to the fill line, screw the cap, and post the kit back - the prepaid return label is included.

How long do results take?

Up to 4 weeks from the date the lab receives your sample. We email the report to the address you provided at checkout. The complimentary GP video appointment can be booked from the report email itself.

Can the test results change over time?

No - your DNA stays the same throughout your life, so the variants we report are stable. The interpretation, however, can evolve as new pharmacogenomic evidence is published. Your report reflects the latest CPIC and DPWG guidelines on the date it was issued. If your prescription situation changes substantially, ask your doctor to review the report alongside the most current guidelines.

Will my health insurer get access to my results?

No. We do not share genetic-test results with UK health insurers. If you live or move outside the UK, local laws may require you to disclose genetic-test results to your insurer - that's outside our control.

Who can take the test?

UK residents aged 18 or over. The test is unsuitable if you've had a liver or kidney transplant, a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, or a blood transfusion in the last four weeks - donor DNA in your sample would confuse the result. We ask three eligibility questions before checkout to make sure you're suitable.

What happens to my saliva sample?

Your sample is destroyed after the analysis is complete and your report is delivered. Your data (the variant report) is stored and processed by Jeen Health and our lab partners in the UK and Europe - see our Privacy Policy for details.

Is this an NHS test?

No - this is a private DNA-testing service. The NHS Genomic Medicine Service runs pharmacogenomic testing in selected clinical contexts (e.g. patients about to start specific cancer drugs). For everyone else, the NHS does not currently offer routine pre-emptive PGx testing, which is why a private direct-to-consumer test fills the gap.

Do I have to share the results with my GP?

It's optional, but we strongly recommend it. The whole point of the test is to inform future prescribing decisions, so showing the report to whoever prescribes for you (NHS GP, private GP, specialist) is the practical use case. The complimentary 30-minute appointment with our own GPs is included so a clinician can help you interpret anything flagged.
