What Is a Clinical Geneticist?

A clinical geneticist is a doctor with specialised training in how genes affect health. They are qualified medical specialists who diagnose and manage genetic disorders in patients of all ages, from babies to adults including physical characteristics.

At Jeen Health, our private clinical geneticists typically see complex or high-risk cases and work closely with our genetic counsellors to ensure you receive the right level of care in a calm, supportive environment. Most patients start with an online genetic counselling session, but if your situation requires additional specialist input, we will refer you to our clinical geneticist team for a comprehensive consultation.

Clinical Geneticist Appointment

A clinical genetics appointment is longer than a typical doctor visit, often around 60-90 minutes (and up to ~2 hours for very complex cases). The geneticist will review your personal and family history in detail and may perform a physical examination to look for any genetic clues. They will explain any findings and discuss possible genetic tests or next steps with you. You’ll have ample opportunity to ask questions, and together you will decide on a plan for any testing or follow-up.

To book an appointment with a Jeen Health clinical geneticist, simply contact our team; no GP referral is needed. We will schedule the appropriate consultation for you, coordinating an in-person clinic visit if a physical exam is required, or a secure online video appointment if not.

When Do You Need a Clinical Geneticist?

Most patients begin with a genetic counselling session, and genetic counsellors manage most cases independently without a doctor’s input. However, if a case is complex or a test shows a complex result, the counsellor will recommend seeing a clinical geneticist for further evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a geneticist do?

A clinical geneticist is a doctor who diagnoses and manages genetic conditions. They will review your personal and family history, perform any needed physical exams, and decide if genetic testing is required. The geneticist also interprets your genetic test results and advises on appropriate medical care or preventive measures.

What’s the difference between a geneticist and a genetic counsellor?

A clinical geneticist is a medical doctor specialised in genetics, whereas a genetic counsellor is a healthcare professional (not a doctor) trained in genetics and counselling. Geneticists can diagnose conditions and order medical tests, while genetic counsellors focus on risk assessment, patient education, and emotional support.

Can I see a geneticist online?

Yes. Jeen Health offers online video consultations with clinical geneticists when appropriate. If a physical examination is required, we will arrange an in-person visit.

Do I need a referral to see a geneticist?

No. You can book an appointment with our clinical geneticist directly, no GP referral is required for Jeen Health’s private service.

What if I just want advice about family risk?

If your main concern is understanding inherited risks in your family, it’s usually best to start with genetic counselling. Our counsellors can assess your family history and advise on your risks and any recommended tests. You may not need to see the geneticist at all if the issue is straightforward, but the counsellor will refer you to a clinical geneticist if a medical evaluation is necessary.

Will the geneticist order genetic tests?

If genetic testing is needed, the geneticist will explain and order the appropriate genetic tests. They will then interpret the results for you and ensure you understand what they mean.
